Preface
The Progressive Debate series consists of a string of articles on a variety of daily life issues in order to offer two-sided perspectives in each unit which can help learners connect their background knowledge to the topic. The most distinguished feature of this book series is the combination of warm up, pre reading and listening, and main comprehension exercises which develop learners’ fluency and accuracy. These comprehension exercises allow students to fully grasp the topic in depth through the course of the whole series. The step by step progression of comprehension exercises engages learners to develop their knowledge for a more evocative conversation. These exercises lead students to develop their own unique perspectives about the topics and engage in meaningful conversation as a final goal.

Reading

Step-by-step execution plan for Progressive Debate in Classroom
1. Brainstorm about the topic using questions given in the warm-up section.
2. Get ready for reading by completing pre-reading exercises. Match the target words to their synonyms and explore the meaning of useful expressions given in the contents.
3. Read or listen the content and find the main idea.
4. Find the answers to the comprehension questions in each article.
5. Fill in the blanks using the given words.
6. Complete the sentences by matching one from each section in exercise 3.
7. Fill in the blanks and complete the summary of the article. After filling in the blanks, summarize the important points of the whole article orally.
8. Find grammatical errors in sentences and correct them.
9. Engage your group mates in a discussion using the questions given in exercise 6. These questions will help learners develop their own opinions about the topics. Try to ask more follow up questions to explore your peers’ opinions.
10. Read the question in exercise 7 carefully and brainstorm for ideas with your peers. Complete the writing task as a homework assignment.

About the Author
Bilal Qureshi earned his Doctorate degree in TESOL at Queen’s University Belfast, UK and currently teaches at Seokyeong University Seoul.
